Cara's Cakery continued...

Today is the day Cara will be running a stall promoting her cake-making business. So I've created her some business cards, and this poster for her stall. I thought it would be a good idea to tempt people's imagination, as well as their taste buds, but putting up loads of examples of her previous work as a border.

My inspiration was taken from those vintage tea-towel designs you often see in gift shops.

(My girlfriend has been ordering tons of them off ebay and they are all around the house.)

New Workblog - Cara's Cakery

Just finished doing some designs for a friend of mine who is starting her own cake-making business.

I wanted to give her business cards and posters the personal touch, so I did this illustration of her. It's a fairly good likeness, and I am most pleased with the colours.

I HIGHLY recommend getting in contact with her if you need any cakes making, (for parties, or a special occasion) as she is the BOMB. Here is a cake she made me for my last birthday:
If you'd like to get in touch with her regarding her awesome baking skills, her email is: carawitwicki55@hotmail.com

New Workblog, Naked Lunch designs.

Ok so... I'm currently designing a bunch of t-shirts/stage banners etc for an electronic band called Naked Lunch.

And while I can't really reveal much of the imagery I've been doing... I thought I might post up a very very small portion of one of the drawings I've been doing as a sort of means of demonstrating the way that illustrators have to constantly adapt ideas to create the best image for the client.

Below is part of the initial drawing I did of a female figure. The finished image will be on one of the big stage banners which will appear either side of the band. It is literally the very very first drawing so has no rendering or shading yet. But it was a 'look' image to send to the client to see if I was on the right track.
The initial brief was to draw on military/S&M/& Sci-Fi comic imagery to create her look. So I put her in a wasp waist bodice and gave her military shoulder pads and a military armband. At this stage I was pleased with the direction, but knew the drawing needed more grit. I was yet to add her buckles and the shine of her leather outfit, but even that I thought might not make her look dominating enough. The problem lay with her face looking too "pretty".

After a discussion with the client we decided the best course of action was to give her some gnarly breathing apparatus and begin to add the dominatrix style buckles and straps to her outfit. The face mask served to add to the sci-fi element, whilst also blocking out her feminine features.

This work is FAR from done, but it's now on the right path. I'll post up more as and when it's finished and cleared for use.

A step forward for electronic mind reading machines...

I had to post this up because I really think it's not only an amazing step for science, but also because the images that are being produced during reconstruction are actually quite beautiful.

Essentially, what's happening is that scientists are using brain activity mapping to recreate images seen by a viewer. Through the use of a library of millions of youtube videos, (unseen by the viewer) and brain activity readouts, the scientists are reconstructing perceived images. The result is this leading, yet ambiguous blend of high contrast images. As paintings these would not be out of place in the Tate.

A larger version of the insect commission:

The last post didn't allow you to actually look at the image larger which I've already (5 mins after posting!) had a complaint about. Haha. This version should fix that issue.

Another pro commission for scriptwriter Mike j Rawson

You may remember earlier this year I posted a blog about a set of design commissions I'd done for a scriptwriter called Mike J. Rawson. Well I just finished another piece for the front of one of his scripts and I thought I might post it up for you guys to see. It's a radio script is about a society of insects/mollusks & animals. It's bonkers, but super funny.

First here's the inked (but uncoloured) image:

And here's the image after it had been coloured/textured & placed on the script's cover page:

I'm really pleased with the way this piece came out, and I hope it helps grab the attention of producers!

Imogen's Birthday Party today!

It's so interesting how even a 2 year old can have really defined opinions and likes/dislikes. My niece Imogen happens to like horses to the extreme that she becomes overcome with joy ever time she see's one. So we've gone for a horse theme for her 2nd Birthday party. Below are a few of the items that will be at the party:

The Almost Complete Horse Drawing

I'll post up images from the party soon!

Painting of Hendrix I did for a friend's birthday...

I haven't posted this up before... It's a painting I did for my friend Chris's Birthday. He is also a musician and a great fan of Jimi. I snapped this picture last time I was over at his house, as I had stupidly forgotten to document it when I made it.

Illustration of the Singer/Songwriter Richard Walters...

A while back I was asked to create an image for a good friend of mine Richard Walters and this is what i came up with. I've posted it fairly low res on here so the image can't be misused, but you can still see the level of detail I went to.
To contextualise the piece, Richard Walters released an album last year called "The Animal". It is extremely good and you should own it (as well as everything else he ever records.)

If anyone would like to commission me for a creative portrait, or some artwork for their project... please email me at: patrickc@hotmail.co.uk

Cheers Old Bean! (A public apology to Hugh Grant.)

Now, Hugh.... I'm aware that I've talked a lot of shit about you over the years. I may have even called you a "Floppy haired twat" on more than 50 occasions.... but you know what? I can admit when I'm in the wrong!

I mean... you are just a guy right? A posh guy sure, maybe one with floppy hair, and a blushing boy face that wrinkles up like a motherfucker every time you smile.... but that's not your fault.
I may have also laughed when you got arrested for your indiscretions, but on reflection... who DOESN'T like a blowjob in their car, am I right?

Basically, Hugh... I think we got off on the wrong foot, and I'd like to start over. Can we start over? I made this illustration of you to sort of, apologise and say.... You actually an alright kinda guy, y'know?

P.S. I still don't really like your films. Hope that's cool bro.

Patrick's Sketchbook Diary 40... Line Portrait of Dan Cronin

For this portrait I tried to draw entirely by eye. No measurements or guidelines. The results came out FAR better than expected!

Patrick's Sketchbook Diary 38 ... Another Train Portrait

Bit of a wonkey one, but I quite like it's sketchiness. I'm usually over-concerned with strong lines, so it's nice to let go sometimes and go a bit Quentin on it.

By the way, This guy had the tiniest laptop I've EVER seen.

Patrick's Sketchbook Diary 37 ... I am a portrait Ninja.

The best time to draw someone is when they don't know it's happening. This is because:

a) It tests your speed skills.
b) They won't get bored and ask to see how it's going etc.
c) It makes you feel like a right proper spy.

Much of my observational work is done whilst on the train. Quite fitting really.

I train. Eye train. I train. Eye train. I train. Eye train. I train. Eye train. I train. Eye train. I train. Eye train. I train. Eye train. I train. Eye train. I train. Eye train. STRAIN.

Etch-A-Sketch self-portrait

Decided late last night to try and attempt a realistic drawing on my Etch-A-Sketch. Here's how far I got last night:

And I worked on it further this morning:
I still may well put a background etc in if I feel the need.

It's really fun approaching traditional styles in uncustomary ways. Tests your skills.

Family portrait...

This year for my sister's Birthday I painted her a picture of herself and our lovely little niece Imogen. Here is the result:

I took a bit of artistic licence on the colours as I wanted the vibe to be a little bit Disney.

Celebrities Are Filthy ANIMALS 5... You can call me Owl.

Following the CAFA of one of my childhood heroes, Michael Jackson, is an artist who is famous for mimicking/parodying MJ (amongst others). Another one of my all time favourite people:

Weird Owl Yankovic!
Shown here in it's natural habitat, the "Weird" Owl is a strange bird that can copy the call of any other bird and is often seen "pulling a bit of an odd face".

Celebrities Are Filthy ANIMALS 4! (The Posthumous edition)

For this CAFA post I thought I'd poke fun at one of my childhood heroes. Ladies and Gentlemen... I give you the world's most famous dog:

Michael Dachshund!

Originally from the performing litter "The Dachshund Five" It didn't take long for people to realise that there was something a bit special about the youngest... Michael by name, and Michael by nature, there was nothing this performing pup couldn't do.

His dance moves revolutionised the dance world, his songs revolutionise the sing world. He truly was a hund amongst hounds...
