Went to Brighton for a few days this week.

Saw some old friends, who I consider some of my closest, despite the lack of seeing them regularly.

While we were there I got a fisheye camera!

Now I can be one of those Lomography geeks...

I had to post this up because I really think it's not only an amazing step for science, but also because the images that are being produced during reconstruction are actually quite beautiful.

Essentially, what's happening is that scientists are using brain activity mapping to recreate images seen by a viewer. Through the use of a library of millions of youtube videos, (unseen by the viewer) and brain activity readouts, the scientists are reconstructing perceived images. The result is this leading, yet ambiguous blend of high contrast images. As paintings these would not be out of place in the Tate.

You may remember earlier this year I posted a blog about a set of design commissions I'd done for a scriptwriter called Mike J. Rawson. Well I just finished another piece for the front of one of his scripts and I thought I might post it up for you guys to see. It's a radio script is about a society of insects/mollusks & animals. It's bonkers, but super funny.

I'm really pleased with the way this piece came out, and I hope it helps grab the attention of producers!

The idea is that he creates live electronic music from user sourced samples. People (including myself) send in vocals, beats, synth lines, basslines etc, and Tim mixes them into seamless organic creations. Now, at the start of me posting up all this Sketch Diary stuff, I told a slight fib. If you look at my first Sketch Diary post I suggested I had stolen the idea off of a friend of mine, but actually I used to sketch in my diaries way back in 2001.

Here are a few excerpts from my trip back from Australia at the end of that year. I know it was that time because our flight home was delayed and re-planned in the wake of the 9/11 attacks.

My friend Rich visited me last week. He's completely changed his whole look, short hair, trim well-kept facial hair. He looks like the kind of guy who works in a phone shop.

Anyway, this is what he looked like the LAST time he visited me and hung out at my house for a bit. I sketched this after a few beers and a glass of scotch, but I still think it came out alright.

This was kinda the end of the night where things were winding down a bit. I think that's why there's a slightly melancholy look on his face.

In the previous post I put up a portrait I did of my friend Dan. Shortly after I completed it I realised that we'd been sat in silence for a good 15-20 minutes as he read a comic and I drew him. Deep within me I could feel a jealous rage burning... I also wanted to read that comic, but I was too poor and handsome to afford one.

I concentrated all my rage into two small dotted lines which I fired at his head. He's never been the same since.

I regularly come across incredible examples of BAD graphic-design during the course of my day job. But this one takes it to a whole new level. The designer of this front cover exercised an unmatchable lack of knowledge about the product he was working on. (Either that or he was a sort of subversive racist.)

Just because he's a black guy, it does NOT mean he is Ice-T. I'm not disputing the fact that Ice-T might be in your film... but that guy... The guy on the cover under the name Ice-T.... ummmm That's NOT Ice-T.

a) It tests your speed skills.

b) They won't get bored and ask to see how it's going etc.

Met a man called Stewart Lee...

You may have seen him... that Stewart Lee. He's one of those things that they have these days... those comedians. You know, the comedian men that they have these days... they go up onto a sort of... raised platform and they look down at you, and tell you inane things about your life that you find hilarious and you agree with your laughter.

You know, the men with the sort of... big sticks that stick up from the platform that they are standing on... and they have a sort of device protruding from the stick. A kind of... a device that you see that all the kids use, and it makes the comedian man's voice that bit louder so you can hear them over the sound of the laughter that is coming out of your mouth hole.

You've seen them right? The comedian men... the ones on the platforms with the sticks and the devices that the kids use, and they speak in a loud voice about all the inane things that happen in your life, and you laugh out of your face and they keep talking and talking and making noises about appliances that aren't made very well and drawers with all bits of stuff in them and you feel that somehow they know things that you don't.

Yeah well, I met one of those. His name was Stewart Lee.

I travel around a lot and quite often I have late night train journeys home. I'm not very good at sleeping whilst sat up (and in front of people) but I still worry about missing my stop by dozing off, so I usually draw to stay awake. Shabazz Palaces carve new Earspace for the Hip Hop head.

One of the greatest things about Hip Hop is it's ability to change and adapt. That's one of the main reasons why it consistently reaches new listeners and tops charts all over the world. The kind of Hip Hop I am bringing to you attention today is not the sort that will ever top charts. but it is the sort that's exploring the cutting edge of Hip Hop.

Shabazz Palaces is a Sub Pop signing of the ex-Digable Planet's rapper Ishmael "Butterfly" Butler. It is a departure from the positive jazz influenced vibe of his previous band, treading new sonic ground entirely.

It's not very often that new acts come along like this, but the first time I heard a Shabazz Palaces track really sent my mind back to the first AntiPop Consortium record. Just unabashedly forward thinking HipHop. Very exciting... Please check it.

Free Hip-Hop from one of the world's greatest emcees! Jean Grae

Jean Grae (A.K.A. Jean Greasy) released her new FREE mixtape "Cookies or Comas" yesterday and if you like Hip Hop and you DON'T download it, you are stupid. IT'S FREE and AWESOME!

For those of you don't know, Jean Grae is a Hip-Hop wordsmith of the highest order, simultaneously mixing humour, thought-provoking social commentary and personal confessional style raps. Somehow balancing an extensive knowledge of geekdom (Her name is a reference to an X-Men character.) and a New York street-cool that you just can't fake.

This release is a precursor to Her upcoming album on Talib Kweli's indie label Blacksmith which will be called "Cake or Death". (Again, a geeky reference to the British cross-dressing comedian Eddie Izzard.) I implore you to download this mixtape and be converted.

Silver(Screen)Cub appears twice in Clint Eastwood's "Hereafter".

I posted a few months back regarding the fact that I appeared in the trailer for Clint Eastwood's most recent move "Hereafter" (which was EXTREMELY exciting for me, Especially considering that Eastwood is one of my all-time heroes!). However when i went to see the film in the cinema I noticed myself even more obviously a second time:

The other scene is during a reading of "Little Norrit" by Derek Jacobi. The scene also features Matt Damon, but he is at the end of the shot and I'm at the beginning. (He was sat about 5 or 6 rows in front of me.)

It was during the setup for that shot that I overheard a conversation between Damon and Eastwood in which Eastwood made a drummer joke... I actually nearly wet my pants when I heard it.

This second set of screen caps comes from about a minute later in the film where again I was placed near enough the action to get a decent view. The guy I'm walking/conversing with is called Phil Cosby. Yep.... Phil Cosby. He was a good dude.

So, after finally locating a site that was streaming the movie in HD, I was able to catch a few screen caps of the scenes I was in in the most recent Harry Potter Film: "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1". Here you go:

Obviously there were tons of people on this shoot, so I have highlighted myself in each so you know where to look.

These particular shots are from the first scene I was involved in. During the chase sequence. The second scene I did has a much clearer view of me as there were only 3 people in the scene.

That sequence is stacked up below. Please click on the image to see it larger. I'm the guy immediately closest the camera, and my friend Dominic is walking alongside me (we look fairly similar, that's why we were chosen for the scene.)

I'm aware obviously that I am not sporting my usual beard and glasses combo. Didn't quite fit with my working class character... I was however wearing a very thin gold chain. Sweet. haha.

However you can't quite see it in any of these shots... Gave me a lot to think about emotionally though while interacting with the principle actors...

What would "Gold-Chain-Wearing Pub Landlord do?" and "How would Gold-Chain-Wearing Pub Landlord Act?" These are just some of the questions that helped me build my performance.

"The Gruffalo" Mural in Tysoe...

They asked specifically for me to paint a Gruffalo scene in the style of Axel Scheffler. It's not an exact page from the book, but I like to think that it could be...

The Joe Bloggz Hip-Hop Minimix...

As you all know I have always been a huge Hip-Hop fan, but for some reason have never been involved in actually making any properly... so when a friend approached me to record his tunes I jumped at the chance. We've recorded 6 1/2 tracks so far and are looking to actually collaborate more fully on a future project. Below is a 4-minute minimix of some of the highlights.

As for production, I cannot claim credit for the beats... they were made by various producers scattered across these fair isles. I DID however: Make sound effects, scratch, and sing* (*on the final track in the minimix.) Oh and also I do the stupid minimix robo-voice (which actually makes me crack up every time i listen to this.

...was to design a series of images for a friend's website.

Michael J Rawson is a comedy scriptwriter for Film and TV, and he wanted some fun and fresh images to personalise his website and make it more in-keeping with his writing style. There's nothing worse than a plain and boring website, that's filled with great content. The correct window dressing helps to add to the inspiration factor.

Above is theHeader/Background image I drew, coloured & textured for his site. I opted for a retro look mixed with a "Simpsons" cartoon colour palette.

His site acts as an online CV and script access for potential producers/investors. So contained on the website are also individualised fonts drawn for each of his scripts. I won't post them up for the moment because, out of context they might not make sense.

One of them was to assist in a window display for a fabric store. I was asked to recreate the vintage look of the old "Make Do And Mend" posters, with a slight contemporary nod. Here are 4 of the colour variants I worked up:

Indie Hip-Hop's King and Indie Indie's Queen start intriguing new project

My favourite rapper: Aesop Rock and Moldy Peaches's Kimya Dawson have joined forces to create a fusion of both of their styles. The project, tentatively named "Bag-Less Maggots" (or possibly "YadaYadaSTOP") was formed after Aesop Rock was brought in to produce Kimya's forthcoming solo album. Below is the first capture of them performing live, at a recent appearance on the 25th of January.

The song, "Delicate Cycle" demonstrates a mixture of Aesop's overtly verbose and cleverly phrased flows on top of Kimya's trademark loose acoustic strums. Dawson's pretty but simple melodies with quirky storytelling lyrics will remind readers of her work on the Juno soundtrack.

This video (although slow to start) makes me extremely excited about what comes next!

I don't often hear smaller bands and feel it is my duty to force people to listen... But I recently stumbled across this little gem online and was blown away.

The band is called Admiral Fallow, They are based out of Glasgow.

Such a beautiful mix of traditional folk and modern indie, interweaving male & female vocals with guitars, drums, and woodwind instruments. Pure bliss.

It's my birthday party tonight, and to celebrate it I'm dressing up as Marty McFly

Any regular followers of my blog will have realised by now that I really like dressing up... and I thought it appropriate, what with the re-release of Back To The Future to commemorate it's anniversary, I would commemorate my own anniversary by mimicking a hero of my youth.

However, at my party tonight... I will definitely be rated R rather than PG.

So, the "Lollygaggers" finally got their act together and did an exhibition!

For those of you who don't know, "Lollygaggers" is an art collective which I am a part of. For those of you that DO know... ignore that last sentence.

Anyway, our first two week exhibition came to a close as of Saturday, and I thought I'd post up the results of my efforts for the exhibition. The works I created were specifically for the showing, and are all connected.

Indian Man Immune to Electrocution!

As shown on "Stan Lee's Superhumans", Rajmohan Nair, is an Indian man who is literally immune to electrocution.

Dubbed the ‘Electro Man’, Rajmohan has the superhuman ability to conduct large currents of electricity without suffering any bodily harm whatsoever.

Just watch below as exposed wires are wrapped around him and then powered. The electricity flows from the plug, through Rajmohan, and to a lightbulb and, later on, a hotplate.

Note that when he’s in the process of conducting, he for some odd reason cannot see—as his eyes become glazed over.

Please do not try any of this at home. Rajmohan is a rarity, as most humans cannot safely conduct such high levels of electricity. If you were to do this at home, you would most likely die. In fact, according to host Daniel Smith, Rajmohan is approximately 10-times more resistant to electricity than the average human.

It's a fairly long video. But it is absolutely amazing!

I've just gotten back from my family holiday... and upon returning I was shown a trailer for the upcoming Matt Damon film "Hereafter", directed by Clint Eastwood.

Earlier this year I did a bit of background acting in this film and, (as with most extra work), I fully expected to hit the cutting room floor and not appear in the film at all! haha. Little did I know that I would make the 2 minute cut for the official trailer!

The film looks excellent, and I fully recommend everyone going to see it at the cinema in October. It's the interweaving story of 3 characters from different walks of life, and the way that death has effected them each. Matt Damon stars as a reluctant medium who ties together all of the other characters with his unique perspective on mortality.
